A Great Start to Summer Reading!!

Summer didn't officially begin until Monday, June 21st, but our Teen Summer Reading Club began with a bang on Saturday, June 5th. So far, 166 of you have signed up for the Teen Summer Reading Club, also known as the 5/25 Reading Club since each participant who finishes five books or reads for 25 hours receives a $5 Borders or Barnes and Noble gift card AND a 1/2 hour GameWorks play card.

If you're looking for reading suggestions, be sure to click on Comments at the bottom of this post, where you'll find reviews by other Teen Summer Reading Club members. Want even more reviews?
Click here, where we've posted 107 of your reviews. Yes, that's right, 107! We've received so many reviews that from this point on we'll post a selection of the reviews rather than every single one so you're not overwhelmed (and so our fingers remain intact)! But keep those reviews coming! They're wonderful and a great resource for teens looking for their next book! And remember, $20 gift cards will be awarded for the best book review by a middle school student and the best by a high school student.

Just a couple reminders:

If you never created a username or you've forgotten your username, stop by the Readers' Services desk on the 3rd floor and we'll add one to the registration form or look it up for you.

You may have noticed that we added the words, "SPOILER ALERT" at the top of some of your reviews. This is to warn readers that the review reveals the ending of the story or some other important part of the story that potential readers might not want to know before reading the book. If you're reviewing a mystery, it's best not to reveal the ending, since most readers like to discover that when they read the book. (That said, keep those mystery reviews coming! We're really enjoying them!)

Finally, if you haven't registered for summer reading yet, it's not too late! You'll find the online registration form and the online entry form at the top of the Blog of Awesome for the rest of the summer. (You only have to register once.)

Happy reading and keep up the great work!!

I gave the above rating beacuase this book is intersting and it takes magic to a whole new level. This book is about a servent that trys to help his master to not get killed by the king. What I think about this book is that it is mysterious and sad.

    Title: The Last Song
    Author: Nicholas Sparks
    Rating: 5
Seventeen-year-old Veronica(Ronnie) Miller has been away from her father for three years and her parents decide to have her visit her father with her little brother, Jonah, which leads her to be rebellious. Purple streaks in her hair and recently gotten caught shoplifting, yet her father acts as if nothing is a problem. While exploring the small town her father lives in, very unlike her usual big city life, she meets a girl named Blaze and some street performers who play with fire. While still on the boardwalk she was on before, she meets a young man named Will. She soon falls in love with him and the town itself. While there, she realizes how her actions could either hurt or help her future and the fact that music, something she gave up so long ago, could help her connect with people around her. Later on, she understands the real reason her mom forced her and her little brother to visit her father. I loved this book because of the writing style, emotions you feel when you read the book, and the fact that you can view things from each characters point-of-view. This book is a heart-warming tale that you keep in your mind for a very long time.

    Title: Stargazer
    Author: Claudia Gray
    Rating: 5
This book deserves a 5 rating because of its undieing love of Bianca and Lucas. It's such a romantic story between them except this time it's long distance but still there. With a story like this comes a problem. Bianca is being haunted by a wraith but she doesn't know why. Until in the end she finds out the lie that has been her life. This book had it all. It was unbelievable and i can't wait for the next book of the series.

Title: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
    Author: Jeff Kinney
    Rating: 4
This book was very funny and enjoyable. I found that I could relate to a lot of what the author wrote in the book. Even though there were a lot of pages, there were pictures so, that helped express the funny parts of the story that Greg (the maine character) is telling in his journal.

    Title: Elsie's New Life
    Author: Martha Finley
    Rating: 4
Elsie grows up in the book. Her father and she take a summer vacation and visits old friends. In this book, her father remarries and she gets a baby brother. As she grows, Elsie grows in her faith and love for her family. This story reminds me that some things change and some things stay the same like love.

    Title: The Book of Lies
    Author: James Moloney
    Rating: 4
Marcel is a young boy found in an orphanage. His entire memory is erased, so he has no idea who he is, where he came from, or even what his name is! An old sorcerer lives in a tower of the orphanage and he created the Book of Lies. This was the sorcerer who erased his memory. The Book of Lies is able to tell the truth from a lie. If you tell the truth, the book glows a bright golden color. If you lie, the book will flip open and write down your lie. But soon Marcel meets a girl named Bea who was his first friend in the orphanage, and she showed him the Book of Lies. Now Marcel discovers all about himself. But it's not that easy. Marcel gets kidnapped along with a snobbish girl from the orphanage names Nicola and his rival, a boy named Fergus who hates him. From here, they're sent on a journey to discover that they are actually royal princes and princess...and they're brothers and sisters! Now they're on a quest to discover themselves, destroy the Book of Lies, and punish their kidnappers! Along the way, they have too many surprises...

I love this book! It had everything I look for in a book: Suspense, drama, action, and mystery. I love how there is always one problem after another, but in the end, everything is all tied up. It's a book that will make you want to keep reading, I assure you. Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

    Title: A Pearl Among Princes
    Author: Coleen Paratore
    Rating: 3
This book was a sweet fairytale speckled with romance. Although the storyline was a little slow in the middle, it was an amazing book. It was frustrating at times, and some parts were confusing, but it was a dazzling book that I adored.

    Title: Elsewhere
    Author: Gabrielle Zevin
    Rating: 3
I'm not sure how I feel about this one. It's more depressing than I would've liked. It wasn't really something I'd read. I don't even know why I even picked it out. It was about a dead girl who, after she died went to a place called 'Elsewhere' where she had to cope with being dead and aging backwards. It kind of questions religious beliefs and you need an open mind to really appreciate the book, but I'm glad I read it-even if I didn't like it all that much.

    Title: Schooled
    Author: Gordan Korman
    Rating: 5
I gave it this rating because it is a good story. It talks about how hard it could be to live on a farm and never hear of things like television and pizza, and to go to a new school where you end up being the president. It has a good meaning to it. No matter where you come from you're still one of us.

This book was so exciting, I couldn't put it down. It was all about Greek Mythology and fighting monsters. The Titans wanted to take over the world and the gods were trying to stop them. You have to read the book to find out who won. Now...on to The Last Olympian.

    Title: Perfect Chemistry
    Author: Simone Elkeles
    Rating: 5
I was in study when my friend told me to read the book. I looked at it, and it looked interesting, but i didn't feel like reading it then. I then was at the book fair with my class where I actually picked up the book and read it a little. I then couldn't put it down. The book is amazing and I recommend it to all teens! One of the big things that I loved about the book is that somethings in it really show what people go through in high school. How it feels like sometimes you have to play a part that people want to see. That's what the girl Brittany goes through. She then gets to know a boy named Alex better by being his chemistry partner. All through the book they try not to fall in love, but of course, they do. :) She then gets to show who she truly is to the world and doesn't have to be fake anymore and realizes her true friends were still there for her. After I finished the book I went up to my friend who first recommended it to me, saying it was the best book I've ever read and I am so excited to read the second book in the series. :)

    Rating: 4
This book was okay. I enjoyed what was happening, but I had already read a book that had almost the same setting, plot, and characters ("Dark Visions" by L.J. Smith). So I sort of already knew what was going to happen, but if you haven't read either books, you'd probably like this one. I liked it because it actually had realistic characters and stuff. It was nice.
